Manta Ray Feeding Frenzy: A Rare Uepi Experience

Katie Kelly

In June of 2023, the usual quiet rhythm of our remote island life was interrupted by something extraordinary. Mid-morning, one of our Uepi transfer boats returned with news that had us dropping everything: a huge flock of manta rays had been spotted in the lagoon.

We’re no strangers to manta rays here. Occasionally, we’re lucky enough to see one or two gliding over a nearby cleaning station, their graceful movements a sight to behold. But this—this was different. Our staff reported over 10 manta rays, and we knew immediately that this was a moment we couldn’t miss.

Without hesitation, we made our way to the schoolhouse and messaged Arlo’s online teacher, explaining the need for a break from class. After all, life lessons sometimes happen outside the classroom. This was one of those moments. With camera gear, snacks, and our kids in tow, we headed straight out to the lagoon, anticipation bubbling within us.

As we approached, the scene unfolded before us: countless manta rays, their massive wings slicing through the water, were feeding on swarms of krill in the deeper sections of the lagoon. Unlike their usual calm gliding over coral, these reef manta rays were barrel-rolling with precision, mouths agape, filtering krill and plankton in an intricate dance of survival. It was mesmerizing.

At one point, we counted over 50 manta rays moving in unison, a breathtaking display of nature’s abundance. This unexpected event even turned into Arlo’s math lesson for the day, as he enthusiastically counted what he called the "staircases of mantas." We could hardly capture the sheer number of rays on our wide-angle lens—every direction we looked, there were another 10-20 mantas gliding through the water.

We soon realized we were witnessing a rare migration of reef manta rays, drawn here by the abundance of food. These creatures, so vital to marine ecosystems, can filter-feed for hours, consuming up to 13% of their body weight in plankton each week. Their journey, dictated by the movements of their food source, is essential to their survival. And here they were, letting us share this intimate moment, unbothered by our presence.

While we often marvel at the sight of mantas at their cleaning station, this was something else entirely. It was a vivid reminder of the health of Uepi’s ecosystem, which not only supports these majestic creatures but also other filter-feeders like mackerel. Moments like these underscore the importance of protecting ocean habitats, preserving them for generations to come.

What made the experience even more special was watching our kids. With courage that belied their years, they swam out into the deep blue, surrounded by swarms of krill and the shadows of gliding mantas. Their awe eclipsed any fear, and they dove into the swarm, immersing themselves in the wonder of it all. It’s moments like these—with pure bravery and curiosity shining in their eyes—that remind us why we’ve chosen this life.

After spending several hours in the water, we invited all the Uepi guests to come and experience this wonder for themselves. The following few days became a spectacle for everyone brave enough to face the soup-like lagoon waters, teeming with delicious manta food and stingers. It was an unforgettable experience, shared by many who found the courage to embrace the wild beauty of this rare event.

The manta rays eventually moved on, their graceful silhouettes fading into the blue. But the memory remains, etched into our hearts as a testament to the beauty of this wild, untamed world we’re privileged to call home. We’ll forever cherish this rare encounter, a perfect example of the magic that happens when we live in harmony with nature.
